Often, actors create characters for on-camera projects within the framework of a self-tape, auditioning for roles with the hope and high stakes of “booking the job.” The Actor’s Workout aims to provide a calm, safe space where performers are encouraged to stretch their creative muscles, hone their individual techniques, and most importantly find themselves in their craft without the industry pressure to achieve any end result. Recommended for experienced actors.

ON-CAMERA INTENSIVES

  • COMMERCIALS - 5 HOURS

    MAY 11, 2024. 2PM -7PM. WITH INSTRUCTOR TERENCE LEE.
    Ages 16+. 12 students. $225.
Auditioning for and acting in commercials is markedly different than working on film or a TV show, and this intensive explores the intricacies of how and why. Who attends callbacks and casts you, what should you wear, how “big” should you be, where’s your eye line, how important is improv (very!), should you read with a prop, and much more.

  • COMBAT: DEATH AND DYING

DATE & TIME TBD. WITH INSTRUCTOR CONNOR HAMMOND.
    Ages 16+. 12 students. $225.
    Description to come.

  • TAKING DIRECTION

    JULY 10, 2024. 11AM - 4PM. WITH INSTRUCTOR ERIKA MIRANDA.
    Ages 16+. 12 students. $225.
Directors long for actors who are flexible, smart, and willing to play. Often, a casting decision comes down to who took adjustments best and clearest, who showed enthusiasm for the project, and evident homework. This intensive puts actors on their feet with direction, prepares participants for callbacks that shimmer, and readies actors for in-rehearsal and on-set flexibility that will make producing teams eager to cast you again and again.

  • ACTIVE VERBS - 5 HOURS

    JULY 24, 2024. 11AM - 4PM. WITH INSTRUCTOR CLIFTON GUTERMAN..
    Ages 16+. 12 students. $225.
Acting is doing. Many performers calibrate performances by “feeling” this or that more deeply, by being “louder,” or by adjusting the pace or upping the stakes. It may work momentarily, but for the long haul, “doing” something to achieve your objective will be clearer and more compelling. This intensive dives deep into active verbs and why incorporating them will make your work immensely more specific and set you up to deliver a clear contrast when asked.

  • COMMERCIALS - 5 HOURS

    SEPTEMBER 18, 2024. 11AM - 4PM. WITH INSTRUCTOR TERENCE LEE.

    SEPTEMBER 30, 2024. 5PM - 10PM. WITH INSTRUCTOR RICARDO APONTE.
    Ages 16+. 12 students. $225.
Shake them bones! We live life in front of others not in our minds but in our bodies. Some actors have been frightened into doing little to nothing below the neck when acting for fear of “overdoing” or pushing. On stage and in wider shots on camera, comfort in one’s body is essential and will ensure that the characters you create are grounded, authentic, and fascinating to watch.

  • CONTRASTING TAKES - 5 HOURS

    OCTOBER 2, 2024. 11AM - 4PM. WITH INSTRUCTOR CLIFTON GUTERMAN.
    Ages 16+. 12 students. $225.
What does “give us two contrasting takes” of an audition side actually mean to casting directors and clients, and how does an actor master the frequent request when self-taping? This on-your-feet session gives actors the inside scoop, tools, vocabulary, and technique to submit noticeably different clips and truly wow with undeniable variety.
